I used to make these at home when I was a kid and they were one of our favorites. They taste a lot like a cake donut. A reader reported making these as mini-muffins, which is a great idea.

Sugar and Spice Muffins
Ingredients
Muffins:
- 1 3/4 cups flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup milk
Coating:
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
Muffins:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- In a small bowl combine flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg.
- In another bowl, combine thoroughly the oil, sugar, egg, and milk. All to the dry ingredients, and stir only to combine.
- Fill 12 greased large muffin tins 2/3 full of batter (do not use paper muffin cups).
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. As soon as they are done, remove from the oven, tip the muffin tin over and knock the muffins out.
Coating:
- Melt butter or margarine in a small saucepan, or in microwave, but do not overheat.
- Combine sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
- While they are still hot, dip the muffins in the melted butter and then roll in the sugar mixture, to coat completely.
- Place upright on a serving plate. Serve warm.
